Taking the things that surround us in everyday life as its point of departure, the exhibition explores our personal environments as complex and shifting constellations of objects, relations and ideas. Detached from their original contexts, things re-emerge in new forms, balancing between the familiar and the strange. Some works remain close to their origins, while others are transformed through materials such as bronze, papier-mâché or photography.
While approaching the subject from an anthropological perspective, the exhibition also attempts to look beyond a purely human-centred understanding of the world. Can objects be understood as more than passive carriers of human meaning – as active presences with material lives and trajectories of their own? At the same time, objects are deeply entangled in our human world. They carry traces of use, desire, care, consumption and bear witness to the social, cultural, and economic structures in which they have come into being. As material imprints of their time, they tell stories not only of individual lives, but also of the societies that have produced them. The exhibition thus invites us to consider our relationship with things – and on what things tell us about ourselves.
The Thing Is is a group exhibition bringing together five international artistic positions: Amy Brener (CA), Auður Lóa Guðnadóttir (IS), Miguel Vega Olivares (DK/CL), Fabian Vogler (DE), J&K / Janne Schäfer and Kristine Agergaard (DE/DK). The exhibition is curated by Ingunn Fjóla Ingthorsdóttir, who is also one of the artists behind LY Contemporary.

Med udgangspunkt i de ting, der omgiver os i hverdagen, undersøger udstillingen En ting er vores personlige omgivelser som komplekse og foranderlige konstellationer af objekter, relationer og idéer. Løsrevet fra deres oprindelige sammenhænge, genopstår tingene i nye former, der balancerer mellem det genkendelige og det fremmede. Nogle værker forbliver tæt på deres oprindelige form, mens andre transformeres gennem materialer som bronze, papmaché eller fotografi.
Udstillingen tager afsæt i et antropologisk blik, men prøver samtidig at se ud over en ren menneskecentreret forståelse af verden. Kan objekter forstås som mere end passive bærere af menneskelig betydning – kan de endda forstås som aktive tilstedeværelser med deres egne livsforløb? Samtidig er objekterne dybt indlejret i vores menneskelige verden. De bærer spor af brug, begær og omsorg, og vidner om de sociale, kulturelle og økonomiske strukturer, de er blevet til i. Som materielle aftryk af deres tid, fortæller de ikke blot historier om det individuelle liv, men også om det samfund, som har frembragt dem. Udstillingen inviterer til refleksion over vores forhold til ting – og over, hvad tingene fortæller om os.

Udstillingen er kurateret af Ingunn Fjóla Ingthorsdóttir som også er en af kunstnerne bag LY Contemporary.
